Course Description

This course presents a multifaceted France constructed by the juxtaposition of diverse spheres. The history of this construction is an arduous one of conflict and constant change. By focusing on evolving institutions, the course analyzes the political struggles out of which the French State arose and developed its current form. It pays particular attention to fundamental developments during the 19th century, using a novel approach to study of that period. Class discussion plays an important role in this course, as students are encouraged to interact with the material not only to consolidate their grasp of the subject but also as a way to analyze events, explore causality, and therefore discover the complexity and subtlety of historical analysis.

Course Description
Through an exhaustive study of the work of Mike Leigh, the course addresses the problem of the filmmaker, particularly in his relationship with cinematographic genres (melodrama, biopic, comedy, social drama), the actor, and staging. The study of the historical and political context of Great Britain from the 1970s to the 2010s raises the question of the relationship between cinema and television and question the relevance of the critical reception of Mike Leigh's cinema, both in France and in Great Britain. The singularity of Mike Leigh's style in the current British landscape calls for the completion of these approaches by an aesthetic study attentive to his affinities with cinematography seemingly far removed from the tradition of British social realism (Ingmar Bergman and Yasujiro Ozu in particular).

Course Description
This course introduces students to the history, institutions, workings, and future of the European Union (EU). The first half of the course is dedicated to describing the most important EU institutions, including the Commission, the Council, the Parliament, and the ECB, also in their relationships with the member states. The second half of the course examines some of the fundamental challenges facing the EU as it seeks to become more competitive, to integrate further existing states into a fuller political economic Union, to enlarge its membership, and to develop a viable common global trade policy and a more effective and coherent common foreign policy. The course also examines the political, economic, and social convulsions, still evolving in many cases, resulting from the European financial crisis of recent years. The course analyzes, with the benefit of first-hand experience, the conflict between the traditional theoretical aims of the European Union and the complex practical political reality of achieving those aims. To this end a number of case-studies are analyzed and debated during the course.
