Course Description
Eleven years after the worst financial debacle with the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the question of regulating the financial and banking sectors remains a top priority for the world's major countries. This course provides an understanding of the transformations underway since the subprime crisis and the European sovereign debt crisis. It starts with an overview of the major changes in the banking sector over the past thirty years because of financial deregulation and globalization. Then it explains the mechanisms underlying securitization and the reason for the strong development of the subprime market that led to the 2007 crisis. This helps to understand the interconnectedness of banks and financial markets. Then the course focuses on the role of central banks as lender of last resort and on the capital regulation in the banking industry. Special attention is dedicated to the Basel Accord. The course ends on the controversial issue of cryptocurrencies and their future.

Course Description
French political life is going through a powerful and largely unexpected transformation. This course covers the structural changes taking place and considers the influence that is on the powers and behavior of public players. Students discover the realities of different political powers and French administrations. The approach of these players, their organization, and their operations are largely concentrated in the heart of these different places of power. Ministries, Parliament, local power, diplomatic positions, community institutions, political parties, unions, press, and polling institutions are also part of the discussion. The daily lives of the players in these places of power are covered outside of their activity, congress, councils, or media representations. This includes elected officials, militants, members of the Cabinet, and high level administrators. The course looks at not only the unique features of these different powers and their organizations but also their closeness and their integration in the heart of the national and international public sphere. The course has no specific prerequisites but permits the students who already have a background in law, history, or political science to use their background when investigating concrete examples.

Course Description

This course contextualizes digital data to understand its benefits and limitations, particularly with generalizability. Students learn how inequality, institutions, and ideology may influence the transformation of the media, as well as Big Data (and small). The inequality segment examines class, gender, and race intersectionalities in digital data production and impact, such as online harassment. Corporate and civic institutions also influence digital data, so the course unpacks institutional effects, from Facebook to the State. Finally, political ideology shapes how data is created and seen, so political campaigns and movements are analyzed to understand how they produce and distribute digital data. The course interrogates the broader role of technology in society and ties current cases with long-standing sociological debates, methods, and theories.

Course Description
This course invites students to reflect on the political and social transformation processes that took place in nineteenth century Europe, between the end of the Napoleonic wars and the “era of the masses” which came about at the dawn of the twentieth century. The analysis is based on the conjoined evolutions of the regimes and the political organizations (persistence and reform of multinational empires, the construction of Nation States, a new energy in the colonial empire), political cultures and sensitivities (liberalism, conservatism, democracy, socialism), and the strategies for mobilization (revolts and insurgencies, formal and informal politization, engagements of war, religious or associations, etc.). Political history is a broad subject, seen through lenses of economic, social, and cultural change, at different rhythms, during the nineteenth century. Europe is not seen as a homogenous body (the course covers tension and conflicts which divided it, its borders, and its limits), nor as an isolated or autocentric body (the European expansion is replaced in the context of the globalization of the nineteenth century and its interactions with America, Africa, and Asia). The course integrates recent research findings (transnational history, imperial history, global history, among others) and students use primary sources from which they extract historical analysis and stories.
