Course Description
Upon entering the 21st century, environment is becoming one of the most pressing issues for the world. This course introduces global environmental politics from different aspects: global environmental issues, such as climate change, waste trade, biodiversity conservation; political causes and implications of global environmental issues; global environmental governance, including UNEP, World Commission on Dams; non-state actors and global environmental protection; global economy and environment; and political theoretical reflections inspired by global environmental politics.

Course Description

This course takes up gender as the primary object of study and category of analysis. It aims to understand the conceptualization of sex and gender by various scholars and the implications of their theorization; understand the process of becoming a woman/man via the social construction of masculinity, femininity, sexuality, and the body; the implications of being a woman/man on our lived experience, and the mechanisms that reproduce, maintain, challenge, and change the observed gaps between the two sexes in daily lives or various institutions, e.g. family, education, and labor markets etc. Assessment: essay, group project, presentation, attendance.

Course Description

One of the important trends of modern business is globalization. Organizations, particularly multinational corporations, are continuously expanding across national borders. This course focuses on multinational corporations as a context in which issues in managing the globalization of an organization are examined. It covers both the macro and the micro aspect of global business management. The macro aspect involves the considerations of the various contexts of the host nation, including the legal, economic and cultural. The micro aspect involves the internal operating environment of the organization, including organizational culture and structure, staffing and training needs, and dealing with business partners across national borders. Regional examples are emphasized.

This course provides an overview of International Relations (IR) theory, with focus on the concepts and approaches often adopted in studying the discipline. It explores different theoretical frameworks and key issues encountered by the globalizing society. Course Description
Any consideration of global citizenship is incomplete without an examination of migration as part of the contemporary world. This course provides an introductory understanding of immigrant entrepreneurs. To understand the operation of immigrant entrepreneurs, we first discuss the general theories of immigrant adaptation. The theoretical framework for understanding migration ranges from the classic Chicago School to the recent institutional approach to migration. We then explore how immigrant entrepreneurship is related to the adaptation and survival strategies taken by immigrants. We focus on how immigrant resources to start their businesses and their impact to ethnic communities. The course also examines policies governing immigration and their impact on global citizenship. Students have an option to visit Taiwan and learn about immigrants and social entrepreneurship there.
