This course offers an introduction to morphology, the study of how complex words are created and grammatically modified to encode different kinds of linguistic information. Much of the coursework involves working through data in a variety of languages in order to provide familiarity with some of the interesting morphological phenomena found among the world's languages.

Course Description
This interdisciplinary course introduces and examines gender and sexuality from a contemporary and regional perspective. Based on a cross-cultural perspective, we examine and analyze different meanings of gender and sexuality, and how these meanings are constructed. In a context of modernization campaigns and globalization processes, this course illustrates how gender relations and sexual politics are related with historical backgrounds, cultural heritage, market expansion, ideological shifts, and capitalist dynamics. The topics of gender and sexuality are interwoven with that of migration, work, family, popular culture, mass media, and consumerism.

Course Description
This course introduces the anthropological study of food and eating and focuses on the social implications and cultural meanings of food and health. It considers how food ways are manifested in our behavior and social relations. Topics include: the origin and diffusion of food and food ways in relation to ecology, plants, social change, globalization, status and social relations, ethnicity and cultural identity, beliefs and symbolism, health and illness, politics, ethics, and such current issues as insecticides, mad cow disease, and bird flu. Assessment: participation (20%), midterm exam (30%), field trip report (30%), final exam (20%).

Course Description
This course provides comprehensive training in reading, listening, speaking and writing in Japanese at the elementary level with an emphasis on elementary grammar. Language lessons are conducted in four languages: Japanese, English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Teachers use various kinds of conversational practices based on natural conversation emphasizing the use of the language in context. It focuses on sentence pattern practice and basic grammar, oral drills, simple compositions, dictation, translation, and reading. This course starts from the writing system and basic pronunciation.

Course Description
This course introduces the academic field of international relations (IR). It examines major theories, key concepts, and approaches that are often employed in studying international relations, and enhances students' ability to actually apply those theories and concepts to better understand and explain international relations and international issues confronting our international society today. The course provides a variety of in-depth case studies and, in the process, provides students with enough knowledge to be able to suggest possible solutions to the various problems that exist in the current international system. Through the theoretical and practical study of international relations, students discover that international relations are often very complex, involving multiple actors, many issues, several enduring questions, and different perspectives. This course provides analytical tools and practical knowledge to better navigate through this complex world.
