This course investigates the cosmopolitan ideal in academic discourse as well as in everyday political and social life. It explores cosmopolitanism in relation to debates in political theory and international relations as well as dynamics surrounding international migration, transnational advocacy networks, and global governance. The course also examines the cosmopolitan perspective in relation to key global issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic, global climate change, economic inequality, nuclear proliferation and the challenges posed by resurgent nationalism and authoritarian populism.

This class analyzes language and gender issues in contemporary society. It looks at how gender issues appear in language, and how language affects these gender issues. Topics include feminism, performative theory, queer theory, gender theory, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse research, and how gender-related phenomena relate to language. This course also covers various gender theories in modern societies; critically examines language use and the social issues naturalized in it; tools and theories of linguistics; and how language might influence our world, and how we can use language to make this world a better place.

This course examines the formulation and development of United States foreign policy from the American founding to the present day. It explores case studies and crises that have tested and reshaped American leadership in the world including the territorial expansion of the United States, the two world wars, the Cold War rivalry with the Soviet Union and its satellites; the Korean War; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the Vietnam War; the collapse of Soviet Communism; tensions in the Middle East; the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001; the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; and the ongoing rise of China and Russia’s war in Ukraine. It also traces the roots of America’s ascent to superpower status during the 20th century and assesses the many dilemmas it faces in the present day as US foreign policy has veered from the Trump administration’s authoritarian populism to the Biden presidency and its return to liberal internationalism. The course also studies how American responses to world affairs–and American interactions with other governments, regions and international institutions–have evolved across generations.

This course provides a study of basic soil mechanics and investigates geotechnical engineering principles. It examines how to make simplifications to complex soil conditions, how to establish strength/deformation characteristics of the soil, and how to apply fundamental geo-mechanics knowledge to solve problems involving the stability of an earth mass.

This course provides general instruction on several different forms of dancing with partners. These dances include but are not limited to the Cha Cha, Waltz, and Rumba. Students learn the proper dance techniques of steps, physical form, presentation and dance etiquette. Students also learn ballroom techniques.
