Course Description

Semester 1 classes explore the specific relationship between language and culture. Students analyze linguistic texts, poems, still images, film, and longer literary texts in order to understand how these objects are shaped by their own particular "language." In semester 2, the focus shifts to the analysis of forms of reading under the themes of space and the city, cultural translation, and misrepresentation and misinformation in the Italian context. Seminars focus on Italian language-specific and area-specific material that relate to the themes covered in lectures.

Course Description

This course considers the role of ethnicity as a social and political cleavage. It examines the impact of immigration and ethnic diversity on party politics and political behaviour, using the experiences of countries in Europe and North America. Immigration and ethnicity are one of the major long-term social issues of today, and studying the effects of these phenomena on politics allows students to gain a deeper understanding of long-term political change - as well as current affairs. The approach taken is to consider both the political engagement and representation of immigrants and ethnic minority citizens, and the broader consequences and development of ethnicity and immigration as political issues in their own right. This includes a consideration of racism, anti-immigrant sentiment, and Brexit. This course has an empirical emphasis, teaching students to evaluate empirical (including quantitative) research.

Course Description
This course provides an extensive introduction to the study of literary modernism by asking the following questions: What is modernism? When was modernism? How did it begin? What have been its effects? Our aim is to think about how modernism emerged, how it is defined and how it was manifested in a variety of different literary genres and forms. Major modernist writers will be discussed, including James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, E.M. Forster, Virginia Woolf and T.S. Eliot, in addition to less canonical texts, such as Storm Jameson’s A Day Off. You will be encouraged to engage very closely with these texts and reflect on formal experimentalism, complexity and ambiguity. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your critical practice and situate your readings in the context of major critical and theoretical debates within and about the field. Key themes and categories will be explored throughout the course, including experience, alienation, estrangement, interruption, identity and subjectivity. The course will also lead us to reflect on politics – from political commitment to the politics of form – so that by the end of the course you will be in a position to interrogate the category of the ‘modern’, discuss the relationship between modernism and modernity, and reflect on the role of criticism in establishing the category of ‘modernism’.

Course Description
This course explores quantum computing, one of the most intriguing of modern developments at the interface of computing, mathematics, and physics, whose long term impact is far from clear as yet. The perspective that quantum phenomena bring to the questions of information and algorithm is quite unlike the conventional one. In particular, selected problems which classically have only slow algorithms, have in the quantum domain, algorithms which are exponentially faster. Most important among these is the factoring of large numbers, whose difficulty underpins the security of the RSA encryption protocol, used for example in the secure socket layer of the internet. If serious quantum computers could ever be built, RSA would become instantly insecure. This course gives students an introduction to this new field.

Course Description
This course examines key topics in the theory of knowledge (epistemology) and in metaphysics (the study of reality). The course considers a number of epistemological questions: What is knowledge? What is it to perceive something? Can we know anything through the use of reason alone? What is it for our beliefs to be justified? What is the scope of our knowledge? The course also covers a number of metaphysical questions: What is it for one event to cause another? What is it to be a person? What makes you now the same person as you were ten years ago? What is time? Does it flow? Do we have free will? What is it for something to be possible?

Course Description

This course explores the discipline of clinical psychology and the ways in which clinical psychologists work to reduce distress and improve psychological well-being of clients. It covers the core principles and features of contemporary theory, and evidence-based approaches and how they are applied to facilitating change in people with a range of physical, intellectual, and mental health problems. Students learn basic therapeutic skills used in everyday clinical practice and discuss the effectiveness of treatments in clinical practice for a range of problems common in people accessing clinical psychology services. The course critically analyzes the strengths and limitations of clinical psychology and equips students with an awareness of the reciprocal links between theory, research, and clinical practice in the development and evaluation of psychological work.

Course Description
This course introduces students to some of the great archaeological discoveries of past cities, graves, and finds from around the world. Students explore some of the earliest remains of hominids, the stunning phenomenon of cave art, the great palaces of the Bronze Age Mediterranean, and the earliest cities of Iraq. It introduces students to the range of evidence archaeologists use, and through the seminars, examines the motives which drove some of the most famous names in the discipline, as well the methods and intellectual frameworks of the day. Students read some of the most engaging texts which lay the cornerstones of the discipline as well as the work of writers, poets, artists, and photographers who visited these sites or brushed shoulders with their excavators and were inspired, creating a spell of mystery which has fired public imagination for centuries. Finally, students critically re-evaluate the significance of these discoveries and ask how modern archaeology has changed modern thought on these sights and sites from the past.

Course Description
This course focuses on the metabolic pathways in the cells of mammals, with some reference to microbes and plants. Students learn about diseases caused by defects in metabolism, such as diabetes, which emphasizes the importance of metabolic control. This course provides knowledge of the essential features of cellular metabolism, and an understanding of the mechanisms through which metabolism is controlled. This is achieved using specific examples and model situations to illustrate principal control mechanisms.
