Course Description
This course explores the many ways in which ancient Greece and Rome have had an impact on the modern world, with a focus on political and social issues. It also challenges the assumption that classical antiquity as such is the only or the most important basis of modern societies. Overall, the course examines key issues facing the contemporary Western world through the investigation of central questions that concern both ancient and modern societies. Individual sessions explore important texts and artifacts that have played a role in shaping the widespread modern understanding of the concepts mentioned, such as Plato's discussions of the best state, Cicero's political speeches, or Greek tragedy, and show how concepts expressed in those texts and artifacts have been taken up in the modern Western world, e.g. in the French Revolution, the US Constitution or parliamentary democracies more generally.

Course Description

This course introduces the basic concepts of brittle and ductile deformation processes and how they control the strength, mechanical behavior, and development of structures in the Earth's continental crust and lithosphere. Students develop a basic understanding of the forces driving deformation, and the displacements and strains associated with simple crustal deformations. The course then further develops a more advanced understanding of deformation processes and structures produced by displacement and deformation in the Earth's lithosphere at scales ranging from the tectonic plate scale, down to the crystal lattice scale.

Course Description
“Value” represents one of the most visible terms and concepts in business today. But with that extensive visibility also comes errant interpretations and outright errors in analysis. This course, “M&V” is directed at providing students with insights into today’s leading analyses and techniques in the related areas of company valuation and merger valuation. The first refers to the defensible worth of the firm as based upon the most reliable and respected methodologies. The second represents the answer to the question, ‘Was this merger a success?’. Long subject to the whimsy of the observer, modern M&A valuation today is primarily oriented to the issue of returns for the acquiring firms continuing shareholders in relation to alternatives (cost of capital) and achievable synergies (post-close improvements).

Course Description
This core course provides an overview of the actions of many of the important groups of drugs used in medicine. It emphasizes the detailed mechanism of action of drugs at the molecular, cellular, or tissue level, citing wherever possible experimental evidence. It shows how drugs (and toxins) may be of use in elucidating physiological processes; provides an understanding of how the time-course of drug action may depend on the processes of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion; and how changes in the concentrations of drugs in the body can be described quantitatively (pharmacokinetics).
