Course Description
This course aims to create an environment (both intellectually and somatically) for exploring the body, mind, the environment, and our perceptions and interactions with them. The main focus is on Buddhist-derived practices that have been made applicable to modern life in the West and in Japan. The core qualities that these contemplative practices cultivate are mindfulness and compassion, and we seek to both understand, embody and observe these qualities throughout the course. This includes the cultural, philosophical, educational and historical trajectories, and their neuroscientific and psychological analyses. The instructor draws on a background in anthropology and Japanese educational theory.

Course Description
This course uses the life and legacy of Mao Zedong (1893-1976) as a way to navigate China’s tumultuous history. Mao is generally acknowledged as a towering figure in Chinese history whose personal legacy and political ideology continue to influence national and world politics today; yet a careful study of China’s 20th-century history reveals the limits and extent of the influence of a “revolutionary” such as Mao Zedong. What was life like for ordinary people? How did transnational flows of migration and culture alter Chinese society? How did women’s lives change as feudal patriarchal family systems began to share authority with the modern nation-state? How did people seek common cause and define life’s meaning? The course gives the context for China’s rise as a new global superpower.

Course Description
This course provides a broad overview of Christianity, both Catholicism and Protestantism, in Korea. It focuses on their introduction, reactions from traditional Confucian Korean society, and the roles played by Western missionaries, particularly their contributions to the nation`s modernization. Korea has one of the most diverse and dynamic religious cultures of any nation in the world today. However, Korea also witnessed a very turbulent history in building a modern democratic nation-state. In this context, Korean Christian Churches and Christians have made great contributions to developing their nation, ranging from participating in independence movements and democratization to developing women`s education and social status. Starting from the encounters between Choson and the Jesuits, this course surveys how Catholicism and Protestantism have influenced Korea and what challenges they are facing now. Lastly, this course examines the history of Yonsei University and Severance Hospital as illustrative examples of the contributions the Western missionaries have made to Korean education and medicine.
