Course Description

This course examines dance practice and theory, providing practical experience of different dances of Aotearoa, the Pacific region and beyond. Course Description

This course defines and interrogates African Dance histories and their transitions in the 21st century. The problematic term ‘African Dance’ is engaged both theoretically and practically to explore questions of appropriation and appreciation of African indigenous dances. The course offers an understanding of African Contemporary Dance in South Africa and the sociocultural factors that have shaped it. It considers the local and global influences of Modernity on Traditional dances in South Africa.

Course Description
The training paradigm in contemporary and classical dance techniques is continued with three classes in Contemporary, two in Ballet and one in Yoga providing the platform for further development of technically strong dancers capable of exploring the breadth of artistry within their dance technique. Two classes in both Contemporary and Ballet are delivered in smaller groups to provide individualized application of training. Training in each of the techniques deepen the knowledge of the body and its movement possibilities.

Course Description
In this course, contemporary dance, ballet, and yoga allow for further development of technically strong dancers, capable of exploring the breadth of artistry within their dance technique. Students receive individualized attention in small groups and take classes taught by leading dance industry professionals. Classes facilitate the mastery of exercises and consolidate the understanding of the principles of both techniques concentrating on the refinement of movement skills in more complex movement patterns. Course Description

This course examines the principles and fundamental theories of Thai dance. Course Description
This subject brings together two synergetic disciplines: improvisation and duo. Duo aims to develop contemporary duo skills with an emphasis on weight taking and sharing based on principles of contact improvisation and efficient kinaesthetic function in movement. Strength, coordination, awareness and sensitivity in partnering work are developed. Emphasis is placed on the practice of safe dance techniques as they apply to the duet form. Improvisation is explored as a means to tap into creative impulse, as a choreographic tool and as a performance modality in its own right. Through the use of improvisation structures of ‘scores’, students define the conditions required to enter fully into the present moment, deepening their confidence in and connection to creative impulse. Personal movement vocabularies are expanded, while acute responsiveness to external stimuli is developed.
