Course Description
This course explores how peace and war are represented, constructed, remembered, and memorialized in relation to one another in the literature and culture of the late 19th and early 20th century. This course considers canonical war literature in dialogue with more marginal or marginalized writing by women, conscientious objectors, and anti-war campaigners, asking how the written, visual, and oral are used to create or challenge powerful ideas of identity in times of war and in its aftermath. This course examines a range of literary, visual, and journalistic material in its cultural context, paying particular attention to the construction, use, and interrogation of narratives of heroism, sacrifice, and manliness, alongside concepts of nation, religion, gender, and class.

Course Description

Throughout the world of literature, there are various kinds of monsters that are created to incur every sense of panic and horror in the minds of the readers. In the literary narratives, the encountering of monsters is destined to map out a scene of anxiety, insecurity, and the loss of self-identity. The self-confidence of man is threatened as the imposing figure of a monster approaches. Monsters and monstrosities that designate the embodiment of the monstrous creatures in this light give rise to a wide range of description and delineation to the in-depth anxiety and horror hidden in the human minds that bear the fear towards the unknown. This class is a literature-based course focusing on horror novels in which the students discuss and analyze aspects and themes specific to the genre. The required coursework includes a comprehensive term essay and various assignments throughout the semester.

The course concentrates on theoretical knowledge related to the following linguistic areas: phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, stylistics, corpus linguistics. The focus of the course is on actual language use, with authentic texts (written and/or spoken, belonging to different registers) and electronic language corpora used as examples. The course concentrated on three main areas: theoretical introduction to basic concepts of corpus linguistics; corpus concordances; analysis and construction of corpora with the support of computer programs. Topics of metalinguistic analysis covered in the seminar include: idiom vs. open choice, register and sociolinguistic variability. Examples are taken from: British National Corpus; Corpus of Contemporary American English; Corpus of Global Web-Based English. Concepts analyzed include: corpus, corpus linguistics, corpus based linguistics, corpus driven linguistics, concordance, collocation, colligation, semantic prosody, semantic preference and lexical priming, as well as their practical applications. Assessment in the course is based on a written midterm that covers the theory part of the course and an oral exam that covers the practical part of the course. These two exams make up 2/3 of the grade. The remaining 1/3 is based on the laboratory assignments.

Course Description

This course not only focuses on literature study but also serves as a critical guide to various thoughts that troubled modern people. The course explores how the industrial revolution, the World Wars, the Cold War, Feminism, Post-colonialism, gender liberation, and concurrent globalization has transformed the English-speaking world. Has the core of humanity changed? How do tradition and modernity contradict one another and in what way are they compromised? To what extent do modern arts push our tolerance of ethics further? Does the British Empire still exist in one form or another? Do globalization and modernity transform our culture fundamentally or only reshuffle it? How do intellectuals—not just creative writers—promote, manipulate, or hinder these exciting but unsettling changes?
