Course Description

This course examines French films from the birth of cinema in 1895 to the more recent creations celebrated at the Cannes Festival. The course studies selected avant-garde and popular films and explores how film narratives can reflect historical and social conditions in France during a given time. The following periods are discussed: Early cinema (the Lumière brothers, Alice Guy, Méliès); the Golden Age of French classical cinema (Renoir); the “New Wave” (Varda, Godard); the “Cinéma du Look” (Besson); “Heritage Cinema” (Claire Denis); and the challenges of Globalization (Sciamma). The course also covers several film genres, from the birth of the fantastique to the influence of the film noir on New Wave cinema. Students explore the cross-cultural interactions between French cinema and foreign films and how French cinema as an art form has had a deep impact on international cinema. Films and readings are supplemented by site visits. Most of the films chosen for this class were shot in Paris and reveal the city's different faces, going from the romanticized version in Agnès Varda's film or Claire Denis' grittier version.

Course Description

This course introduces its participants to mass media systems and structures in Germany and Europe and provides them with the analytical tools and background knowledge to assess the ways in which the mass media and politics interact and thus shape each other. The course begins with an overview of the different structures of mass media (public/private) in Germany and selected European countries, including how they have historically developed and particularly which political ideas have shaped the frameworks in which media institutions and individuals operate. At the same time, the course takes a critical look at how the media in turn have shaped and are still shaping the ways in which the political process works and presents itself to the public. Historical and current case-studies are utilized to analyze the manifold points of interaction between media and politics. At the end of the course, students also have the opportunity to compare European and American media politics and to ask whether there may be trends and influences across the Atlantic that are shaping today's politics and mass media on both sides.

The course is structured in two parts: a first theoretical part presents some of the main concepts and theories for the study of the social implications of technologies, with particular reference to the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS); a second part is dedicated to the deepening of the social and cultural implications that have characterized some of the most important technologies for digital communication and in particular the Internet, the smartphone, and online platforms. More specifically, the topics addressed are: an introduction to the basic concepts and terminology for the study of the relationship between technologies and society; the critique of “technological determinism;” the “social construction of technologies” approach; the role of end users in shaping technologies; the history of the Internet in a social and cultural perspective; the process of innovation of the smartphone and its uses in society; and the social role and technical mechanisms of digital platforms.

Course Description
This course introduces a variety of approaches towards filmmaking, as evidenced in recent works of contemporary world cinema. While the films included on the syllabus have been selected from the past two decades – featuring active, present-day filmmakers – the course encourages the appreciation of such cinematic achievements as not only arising out of an immediate context, but as indebted to the past and to the history of cinema. The course begins with a consideration of Hollywood and its global dominance through commercial genre cinema, before touring the world for a series of alternative approaches to film making that challenge Hollywood's hegemony, with a particular emphasis on art cinema in both its national and transnational forms. The formal achievements and aesthetic merits of individual titles are discussed in relation to the filmmaker's personal artistry, influential trends, and movements in film history that had an effect on the work in questions, as well as relevant contextual (i.e., social, economic, cultural, &/or political) factors.

Course Description
We are currently living through a communications revolution: the proliferation of the internet and the rapid growth of online communication over the past decades has undeniably changed our society, but it is not clear yet where this process is headed and which consequences it has for Western culture. This course puts this transformative process into historical context by comparing it with the rise of other mass media technologies and how they have shaped our modern world. Through comparison students learn to understand and predict the consequences of the rise of the internet for modern culture. This course considers mass media as cultural phenomena: books, newspapers, the telegraph, television or the internet are not just technologies, but also include historically specific practices and knowledge. This course provides an overview of how various mass media have shaped modern culture and society. However, mass media has not only helped to spread the images, ideas, concepts, and values that constitute modern culture (such as rationalism, nationalism, and the idea of progress), but they are themselves important symbols of modernity. This course critically investigates the cultural impact of these mass media technologies and the way they have been represented throughout modern history, asking questions such as: Who really used these technologies and how were they consumed? How are they constructed discursively through literature, laws, images, etc.? What happens to a society's culture (its religious, political, cultural texts), when it is increasingly mediated by these technologies?

Course Description
The lecture part of this course focuses on the history of silent film. The discussion section focuses on the analysis of the cultural and aesthetic issues of silent film. Cinema was born with the films of the Lumière brothers. The course traces the turbulent history of silent films and experimental film, but also considers how certain forms were gradually imposed and why the transition to talkies was so late. The course relies on a large number of excerpts from the diverse film industries of various countries and films. The works of Georges Méliès, Sergei Eisenstein, and Buster Keaton may be covered. This course teaches students how to exercise and practice film analysis. Through the use of several films, the course familiarizes students with analytical tools and tests their knowledge. The discussion is a continuation of the course of history of cinema; the examples considered have the distinction of being silent films.
