Course Description

Students taking this course build upon the Beginners and Elementary levels and expand command of written and spoken Spanish. Intermediate Spanish B.1.1. focuses on readings and discussions of Spanish culture and develops students’ vocabulary while reinforcing complex grammar and syntax. This course focuses on accurate written production with review of more complex grammar skills such as pretérito pluscuamperfecto and presente de subjuntivo. The course requires students to take Spanish 4 as a prerequisite.

Course Description
This course examines the short story in Latin American literature from the 19th and 20th centuries. Periods and authors studied include the romantic, realist, and modernist eras; Horacio Quiroga and the theorization of the short story; the vanguard versus the Creole short story; Jorge Luis Borges and the renovation of the short text; Julio Cortazar, Juan Rulfo, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Juan Jose Arreola, Augusto Monterosso, Julio Ramon Ribeyro, and others.

Course Description
This course is a study of the principal works and authors of the colonial period of Latin American literature. Topics, figures, and authors covered include: the arrival of the Spanish to the Americas; Christopher Columbus; the chronicles of the Spanish conquest (Bernal Díaz del Castillo, Bartolomé de Las Casas, Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca); "El Inca" Garcilaso de la Vega; the Renaissance in Latin America; epic poetry (Alonso de Ercilla); Baroque literature; the Enlightenment and revolutionary prose; and poetry in the 18th century.

Course Description

This course studies linguistic variation in the Spanish language, specifically, diachronic and synchronic differences in the Spanish of Spain. It also examines linguistic geography and provides an analysis of dialectal variations of Spanish both inside and outside of Spain. Topics covered include: concepts of language and dialect; dialectology and aural geography, regional atlases, isoglosses; linguistic variation in Spanish, Hispanic languages and dialects, Spanish in America, Africa, and Asia, Judeo-Spanish; history and dialectal divisions dialect spoken in Spain, principle phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical traits of each.
