Dates and Eligibility
Program requirements are about helping you find your best match in a new academic setting abroad, and eligibility helps you narrow your choices to find the best program where you can succeed and thrive.
To be eligible to apply to UCEAP, you must meet the following basic criteria:
- You are enrolled as a degree-seeking student with a UC campus, are on filing fee status, or are on an approved educational leave or other approved leave status.
- You are in good academic standing as defined by your UC campus.
If you meet the basic criteria—good news! You meet the qualifications to apply to UCEAP. If you are unsure about your eligibility, contact the UCEAP study abroad advisor for the program.
Note for transfer students: Incoming transfer students are eligible to apply for UCEAP programs but must check with their campus study abroad office to determine how soon they can participate in study abroad.
Program Requirements
You must maintain your eligibility for the program, including the required minimum GPA, from the time of application through the end of your program. If you have concerns about your eligibility, contact the UCEAP study abroad advisor for the program.
The following are the minimum requirements to participate in this program. Some requirements are set by the host country, the host university, or third-party providers. Most requirements must be met at the time you apply. However, you have until departure to meet the class level and most language requirements.
Note for transfer students: Unless specifically noted, your transfer GPA can be considered at the time of application if you don’t yet have a UC GPA. If you have less than 3 quarters/2 semesters at UC, your transfer and UC GPAs can be combined.
Visa and Passport Considerations for US and non-EU Citizens
You will need to obtain a visa for this program. Spain's visa process is complex and takes time, and UCEAP staff will provide resources to guide you through the process once you are accepted. The earlier you apply, the earlier you will receive information about the visa process.

Additionally, you will need to submit your passport to the Spanish Consulate with your visa application. This means that international travel will not be possible for up to seven months before your program's start date. If you plan to travel internationally before your program's start date, please contact a UCEAP study abroad advisor to discuss your options.
US and non-EU citizens must have a passport that is valid for at least one year after the program starts and obtain a Spain student visa. Visa processing times are lengthy, and international travel may not be possible for up to seven months prior to your program start date unless you have a second passport. Submit your UCEAP application as early as possible to get started on the visa application process.
