Academics

Fields of study: Science

This intensive, fast-paced program focuses on physics for life sciences.  It is divided into two four-week sessions. The two courses offered are equivalent to the three-course/two-semester physics sequence at UC, and the courses have been pre-approved for students attending UCI, UCSB, and UCM. Other campuses are currently in-review.

Unique study opportunities

  • Engage in a study of physics with students from all over the world.
  • Fulfill calculus-based physics credits with courses that may be impacted at UC.
  • Learn to keep records of observations, interpret data, and write scientific reports.

Language

Language of Instruction: English

Language study: None

Courses and Credit

REQUIREMENTS WHILE ABROAD

To successfully complete this program:

  • Take two courses for a total of 15 quarter/10 semester UC units.
  • Take both courses for a letter grade; pass/no pass is not available for this program.

CURRENT PROGRAM COURSES

Introductory Physics 1 and 2 (15 quarter/10 semester UC units)

(UCI has pre-approved the physics courses to satisfy Phys 3A, 3B, 3C, with labs or 7C, 7D, 7E with labs)

(UCSB has approved the physics courses to satisfy Physics 6A, 6B, 6C with labs)

(UCM has approved the physics courses to satisfy Physics 08 and 09 with labs or 18 and 19 with labs)

Academic culture

This intensive, fast-paced program focuses on calculus-based physics for life sciences.  You will be covering a full year of Physics over 8-weeks (two 4-week blocks). Each week will include multiple 2-hour lectures, two 2-hour workshops, two 3 and a half hour labs, and two 1-hour skill training. You will have an exam every other week and a quiz in every workshop. You will need to do approximately 25 hours of self-study per week, in addition to the scheduled classroom time, in order to be successful in this series.  Although a high level of independence is expected you can expect support such as small class sizes, a high tutor-to-student ratio in workshops and labs, daily office hours, a pre-exam help desk, and online material such as recorded lectures and discussion forums.

Further information about the program structure, expectations, and assessment can be found under the modules section on the Sussex website.

Grades

You will earn direct UC credit and grades for all coursework. Grades for this program are typically available in early October.
