This course examines the principles, design, administration, and implementation of database management systems. Emphasis is placed on relational database systems. Course topics include: entity-relationship model, relational model, relational algebra and calculus, database design and normalization, database query languages, indexing schemes, integrity, concurrency control, and query processing.

This course is an introduction to a variety of topical areas in the history, methodology, theory, and critiques of sociocultural anthropology. From hunter-gatherers to online gamers, the discipline aims to observe and understand a variety of cultures from around the world. Areas of current debate within sociocultural anthropology that we will explore include culture, representation, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, religion, nationalism and transnationalism, power and inequality, and the evolution of field methods. Anthropology strives “to make the strange familiar, and the familiar strange”.

This course develops conceptual and perceptual understanding of the basic materials and structures of music, including rhythm and meter, intervals and scales, modes and keys, as well as melody, harmony and contrapuntal practices. The course integrates ear training with the analysis of a wide array of musical examples.

This course introduces fundamental ways of understanding a city by looking at its architecture and physical environment as sites of collective living, production, exchange and consumption. From the production of art to the collection of rubbish, the course aims to explore the architectural and urban dimensions of cities (from material to cultural and symbolic) through salient topics such as city and war, city and power, city and trade, energy, transportation, housing, and entertainment. Referring to prominent cities in the world including Hong Kong, significant urban themes such as local versus global, memory or envisioning, development and sustainability are explored. Topics include: What is a city for? How do cities work? How are cities made and remade? What role do architects and others play in the design, planning, maintenance and imagining of cities?

This course combines a case study discussion approach to illustrate strategic decision making in business with an integrated hands-on business simulation exercise as part of the learning process. The course discusses making strategic choices and evaluating options and tradeoffs in a competitive business simulated industry environment and develops a broad perspective in managerial decisions. Students also develop an appreciation of economic and social factors that drive modern global organizations.

An advanced course designed to students who have completed CLCP4433 or CPTH4433. For students who have not completed the above course, they are invited to join the Putonghua placement offered by CLC. The course is designed to enhance language skills in communication, as well as to increase understanding of social life through a series of training exercises including reading and listening comprehension, special report writing, and group discussion, etc.

This course is a broad introduction to Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), with an emphasis on techniques, models, theories, and applications for designing, prototyping, and evaluating current and future interactive systems for human use. HCI is an interesting and important area of study, providing the human perspective to computing. Besides technology and innovation, it also touches on issues like ethics and social responsibilities related to technologies in the real world. Selected topics may include multimodal interaction design, ubiquitous/mobile computing, virtual/augmented reality, agents and robots, and HCI applications in various domains such as education, health, urban sustainability, and scientific discoveries.
