This introductory course provides a survey of Western history from the ancient period through the nineteenth century. It is designed for students who wish to pursue more specialized topics in Western history in the future and/or who plan to major in history. Students are introduced to key historical figures and events, while the course also emphasizes how perceptions and expectations of both individuals and collectives (such as nation and religion) have evolved over time.
Lectures proceed chronologically and are complemented by in-class activities that center on a variety of primary sources. Through these materials, the course uncovers the historical complexity of important concepts that are often simplified or taken for granted, such as liberty, equality, progress, and truth. Ultimately, the course invites students to consider how they, as historical actors, wish to engage with knowledge and the world around them.

The legal framework for private international business transactions regulates the international sale of goods, imports/exports, technology transfer, intellectual property, and foreign direct investment. We consider such topics generally and in specific situations. Focusing largely on transactions between private parties, the central goal of this course is to understand the importance of international business transactions and the legal framework surrounding the topic. After successful completion of this course, students have basic information allowing them to be aware of and adhere to laws surrounding a variety of international business transactions. The main goals of this course are as follows: (1) to understand the importance of international business transactions; (2) to understand the legal framework surrounding the international business transactions; and (3) to understand the specific legal issues regarding international business transactions compared to domestic transactions.

This course covers important algorithms and theories for data mining. Data mining refers to theories and techniques for finding useful patterns from massive amounts of data. Data mining has been used in high impact applications including web analysis, recommendation system, fraud detection, cyber security, etc.
Main topics include finding similar items, mining frequent patterns, link analysis, link prediction, recommendation system, data stream mining, clustering, graph mining, time series prediction, and outlier detection.
Prerequisite: Students should have an undergraduate-level knowledge on the following topics: Algorithms, Basic probability, Programming, Linear Algebra
The course will provide some background but will be fast paced.

This course introduces students to the world economic dimension of the Korean economy, especially focusing on its trade, investment, and financial transactions with major partners. Students learn the basic theories of microeconomics and macroeconomics, and how these theories are applied to reality using Korean examples. The course also pays special attention to Korea’s involvement with diverse international economic institutions, such as the OECD, APEC, and the WTO, etc.
Students gain basic knowledge of the process of Korea’s economic development, where the country’s interactions with the world economy have played a decisive role The course is designed to be an interactive course, so that students must be prepared for class discussion by reading relevant materials and documents provided. Frequently documents from the WTO and OECD, as well as other international organizations will serve as basic readings.

This course introduces machine learning for Artificial Intelligence system design and implementation. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to explain the concepts of different machine learning models used in civil and environmental engineering areas; identify proper machine learning models and learning techniques for regression and classification tasks; apply machine learning models to generate useful information from raw data; evaluate outcomes of machine learning models based on evidence-based judgments; and create a machine learning model to generate useful information from raw data.

This course covers the politics of development at various geographical scales (urban, national, and international). It also examines how partnerships and negotiations work among various participants who have conflicted, competed, and cooperated throughout the modern history of space/place making. Students learn skills to critically analyze the power relations that exist among different actors involved in development. The course asks “Who governs?” and “Who makes decisions or influences decision-making that leads to the formation of space?” Regarding the influence of decision-making, the course focuses on the politics of policy narratives and environmental discourses. Topics include What is the power in placemaking; Body Politics- Capitalizing, industrializing, and disciplining bodies; Critical Geopolitics; The geopolitics of nuclear weapons and nuclear power; The politics of memory and memory placemaking.

This course is tailored for undergraduate students majoring in international studies who seek to understand the foundations of international trade law and policy. It offers a comprehensive overview of the global trading system and prepares students for careers in trade-related fields within both business and public sectors. Students learn about key topics such as anti-dumping measures and subsidy/ countervailing duty cases, equipping them with practical skills for the private sector. Additionally, the course introduces the crucial relationship between public policy and law, making it an excellent starting point for those considering advanced studies or a Ph.D. in international trade law and policy. Topics include Non-discrimination: Most-Favored-Nation, Non-discrimination: National Treatment Principles, Tariffs, Quotas and Non-Tariff Barriers, Escape Clauses, Safeguards and Adjustment Policies, Regulation of Dumping, Subsidies in International Trade, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measure, Technical Barriers to Trade, Trade in Services, and Regional Trading Agreement.

This course applies the concepts and analytical tools of game theory and information economics to cover election patterns, the influence of interest groups, the inconsistency of monetary policy, fiscal policy including taxation and government spending, the expansion and socialization of the social security system, income distribution policy and economic growth, and the impact of the electoral system on economic policy and system. (Prerequisite: Microeconomics)

The course focuses on understanding the minimum content for participating in community service and focusing on the practice of social service activities. This course undertakes a critical examination of the historical trajectory of Korean education while engaging students in in-depth reflection on its prospective vision and directions for the future. It surveys the philosophical foundations, the colonial education system, and the policies of the U.S. military government, as well as the diverse economic, political, social, and cultural forces that have shaped Korean education from the pre-1900s to the present. Special attention will be given to major sectors of education—including higher education, curriculum, teacher education, and technical education—in order to analyze the ways in which educational development has contributed to the nation’s growth and modernization. Through this inquiry, students will not only gain a comprehensive understanding of the overall evolution of Korean education but also develop a nuanced appreciation of its distinctive characteristics, interpreted through the lens of development and progress.
