Course Description
This course, utilizing theories and approaches of international relations, provides a comprehensive introduction to China's foreign policy and role in current world affairs. It examines the key events and factors that brought about the emergence of China in the 21st century. It also addresses how China deals with certain contemporary thematic issues such as territorial disputes and trade as well as how China deals with major powers and neighboring countries. The course examines the sources of conflict and cooperation in China's actions including their impact on regional and global politics. ASSESSMENT: attendance (10%), midterm exam (20%), paper (30%), final exam (40%).

Course Description
This course explores the relationship between globalization, transnational corporations, international law, and nation states. It provides an analysis of businesses and their role in the protection and promotion of labor welfare and labor rights. The course covers international labor organization (ILO), labor rights and welfare of migrant workers, globalization and its effect on labor, international trade and development, international montetary and financial institutions, international regulation, influence and power of transnational corporations, and human rights violations. Other topics include international labor migration and displacement caused by globalization; cross-country labor migration carried out by multinational corporations; impact of transnational corporations on the national social, economic, and political developments of national states; and issues of workers' rights and quality of life of both foreign labor and local workers in multinational enterprises. It also investigates international declarations, conventions, and protocols, as well as national legislation pertinent to welfare rights of transnational labor, displaced persons, and local workers in multinational corporations.

Course Description
This course provides an overview of children's rights using a human rights approach in the context of globalization and the child, family, community, and societal context in Asia. Beginning with a survey of current knowledge and research in childhood and child development, the course provides a comprehensive look at the historical evolution of the rights of children. It discusses the main principles and provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Children (UN-CRC), including monitoring and reporting. The course also covers current issues and challenges faced in Asian countries in relation to child rights (e.g. social policy, social protection, education, child protection) and key child rights institutions and movements that have developed in the region over the past years. ASSESSMENT: attendance (20%), midterm (25%), policy brief presentation (25%), written policy brief (30%).

Course Description
This course provides a study of social changes and social problems. It examines who defines what a social problem is; why some social problems receive much attention, while others are ignored; and what the impacts are of defining social problems in a particular way. The course examines these questions drawing on case studies of contemporary issues, like poverty, inequality, health care, and education policy. It focuses on the following aspects: evidence-based analysis of the dynamics of social change; factors contributing to social problems; proactive and reactive measures in responding to social problems; and case studies of the dynamics of social change and social problems in Thailand and other countries.

Course Description
This seminar-style class surveys a volume of literature that highlights the analytical tools economists use to analyze industrial organization (i.e., how firms and markets interact). Topics include competition and monopoly, market structure, mergers, game theory, development of theory, price discrimination, product differentiation, advertising, vertical integration and relationships, oligopoly behavior, antitrust, industrial organization, and regulation and deregulation. The course emphasizes how to write and present outlines of complex literature and how to write literature reviews at a high level. This course provides a study of the historical background and development of countries in Southeast Asia before World War II. Using a historic perspective combined with social sciences techniques, the course covers Southeast Asia's development from the earliest civilizations up to the Pacific War of 1941, the general pattern of its development, and the reasons behind the current state of affairs in the region. Topics include arrival of world religions, rise of classical states, age of commerce, warfare, early colonial regimes, gender and slavery, economic transformations, reform and westernization, World War I, anti-colonialism and nationalism, and the emergence of nations.
