Course Description

Access to clean water, fertile soil, critical metals, and cheap energy is crucial for modern society. However, the unsustainable use of these natural resources is changing the face of our planet at an unprecedented rate. This course builds on the understanding of planet Earth gained in ES1001, and it highlights the work done by earth scientists to solve 21st century resource and environmental challenges. The course investigates the geological processes that generate Earth's "traditional" resources, such as metals and hydrocarbons, and their environmental impact. Equally, students study "new" alternative energies such as geothermal and hydro power, and discuss resource requirements of a "Green New Deal" and potential environmental solutions, such as carbon capture and pollution remediation strategies. There is a fully-funded six-day residential field excursion to the Highlands of Scotland.

Course Description
This course introduces students to the main concerns raised by critical terrorism studies. Working within the critical security studies tradition, critical terrorism studies argue that mainstream terrorism studies has not been open to new challenges and perspectives. As such, terrorism studies problematically reifies particular sites and structures of power. Because of this perspective, critical terrorism studies poses several challenges to terrorism studies about how terrorism is defined and limited to particular actors. This course explores these challenges, which include state terrorism, the discourse of radicalization, and the role of emotion before turning to the intended outcome of critical terrorism studies scholarship: emancipatory practices.

Course Description
From the aftermath of the Norman Conquest of England to the close of the 15th century, the history of the island of Britain centered on the development of two monarchies: the English crown and its dominions and the kingdom of Scotland. This course has at its core the relationship between the two realms and comparisons of the different but related societies they contained. Students examine the English and Scottish realms as specific examples of northern European kingdoms in the high and later Middle Ages. The course stresses their internal development and issues of national identity, but also focuses on the full range of contacts between the princes and peoples of Britain and the wider world, in particular via the Church and through extensive ties with France and the Low Countries.

This course introduces the diversity of life on Earth and addresses elements of organismal and ecological aspects of life. The course is divided into several sections beginning with the classification of life and an introduction to the kingdoms Monera, Fungi, and Protista. Photosynthesis, respiration, and the evolution and diversity of plants are studied. Students then look at the diversity of animals in the sea and the movement of some groups onto land. The course also provides an introduction to animal behavior and developmental biology, before finishing off by introducing ecology and the various factors promoting and threatening biodiversity. Throughout the course the lecture material is complemented by extensive practical classes introducing a variety of fieldwork and laboratory techniques.

In this course, students are introduced to influential thinkers, theories, and texts across four main themes: the nature of reality; matter and the cosmos and their representations in the Arts; the idea of rights; and the principle of evolution as applied within and beyond the biological sciences. Students encounter thinkers from Plato to Einstein, via Newton, Kant, Wollstonecraft, and Darwin. They develop an appreciation of the wider importance of figures such as these to a range of human intellectual endeavor across disciplinary boundaries. Students make use of original source material where possible.
