Course Description
The course builds on Ethnographic Research Methods and introduces students to the practical and methodological aspects of ethnographic research. The course teaches students to design and conduct an independent ethnographic research project around a key anthropological theme, allowing them to reflect on and apply the theoretical and practical insights gained in the course of their degree. Students are guided and supported in formulating their own research questions, designing a methodology, conducting ethnographic research, and writing up their findings in a final report. The course develops students' ability to apply their theoretical knowledge of research methodology to a specific research project.

Course Description
This course explores how knowledge of brain structure and function help explain the production of behavior. It covers topics including ionic mechanisms underlying the nerve action potential; synapses and neurotransmission; neuropharmacology of commonly used anxiolytic drugs; functional neuroanatomy of the human brain; brain development and neurogenetics; behavioral genetics; sensory and motor systems; neural mechanisms in cognition and reward, and in learning and memory; and neuroplasticity.

Course Description

This course considers development processes in the light of how they are shaped by and impact gender discourses and relations. The course covers key concepts in the analysis of social relations between women and men in different cultural, economic and political contexts. This includes examining the nature of gender inequality and of the household as a social construct, and reviewing concepts of power and empowerment. While concerned with providing a theoretical and conceptual grounding by reviewing debates on the household and the gender division of labor, the course is organized around substantive and policy topics related to poverty, labor markets, women's employment, migration, and globalization..

Course Description
This course examines significant and canonical texts by American writers produced since 1945. Students analyze the working of class, gender, and race in these texts and the way these concerns translate into literary form as well as how they might relate to changes in American society. To see the different ways in which writers tackle the important questions of their time, students explore many of the social and cultural issues associated with American modernity and post-modernist aesthetics through literature.

Course Description
This course explores the psychology of child development from birth through adolescence. The emphasis is on exploring major theories and research in the field of developmental psychology and their application to the real world. Topics include attachment and temperament, language acquisition, emotional development and regulating affect, parenting and moral development, gender development, and peer relations. Students are challenged to unpack contributions of nature and nurture and develop an appreciation of the methodological constraints on developmental psychology research.

Course Description

In this course, students explore how children acquire language and the factors influencing early language development. While language learning may seem effortless,  students examine various aspects of acquisition to understand this complex process. Topics include gestures and accents, vocabulary growth, the role of sleep, language learning in non-laboratory environments, and the impact of television and electronic devices. Students focus primarily on typical development but also consider insights from children with developmental disorders and learning differences.

Course Description
Digital media saturates everyday life, re-organizes cultural productions of all kinds, and re-mediates the teaching and learning environments which students inhabit at Sussex. The course examines this digital environment through both practical and theoretical perspectives. Students learn to understand and use digital tools to enhance and explore their study and to take a critically informed stance on their existing practices. Students examine developments in new media with a particular emphasis on different uses of digital media, enabling students to make distinctions between kinds of material, genres and platforms.

Course Description
This course studies cultural taste, cultural status, and cultural value, and considers the history, development, and significance of the academic study of popular culture. The course offers students of both cultural studies and media studies an opportunity to consider related issues to pursue: historically-rooted accounts of how the study of popular culture developed in British higher education and of some of the key conceptual approaches which shaped those studies, an exploration of how the bringing together of popular culture and “the academy” has posed, and continues to pose; problems related to conceptions of cultural hierarchy, questions of taste and value; and definitions of educational worth.
