Course Description

This course provides an understanding of key issues and applied methodologies relating to management accounting frameworks used by managers when faced with making financial decisions in the context of the business environment. The focus is on information for cost management, budgetary control, and short and longer term financial decision making. It examines the blend of financial analysis and managerial judgment required to make sound decisions. In particular there is an emphasis on issues in overhead cost recovery; contribution costing and CVP analysis; costing issues in the context of a competitive environment, including activity based costing (ABC); relevant costs for decision making; core investment appraisal techniques (ARR, Payback, NPV and IRR); budgetary control, variance analysis, and standard costing.

Course Description
This course introduces the entrepreneurial process of the technology industry in general. It examines the fundamental aspects of launching a technology entrepreneurial venture to complement the research and development activities in science and technology. The course explores the common practices in venture development process such as opportunity identification and verification, to technology transfer and commercialization. Topics on legal subjects (intellectual properties and patent laws) and simple financing and strategic approach in the business plan are covered. Lectures by local entrepreneurs is one of the important components of this course, in order to further nurture an entrepreneurial mindset via learning from real-life examples in this specific industry of technology.

This course surveys the field of international business from a managerial perspective. The course briefly examines the context and environment of international business and explores the management of an international business, considering issues on both a micro- and macro-level. It also examines general issues affecting international management such as ethics, social responsibility, and women in international firms. Topics include international management in North America, China, and other countries; culture and culture gaps in international management; competitive strategies, company-situation analysis; global markets; entry market modes; international strategic alliance; multinational e-commerce; international human resource management; motivation and leadership theories; and current issues in international management. Course Description

This course presents a practical approach (based on Excel examples) to understand the principles of management science and to apply them to business decision problems. Developing models of practical decision-making problems and solving them using Excel Solver, one learns how important and useful the scientific decision making process based on management science is for solving problems in real-world business applications. Focusing on management science modeling skills, this course covers linear programming, simplex method, sensitivity analysis, transportation models, integer programming, and others (if time permitted). Students learn the fundamental knowledge and analytical skills in management science. Management science (also called Operations research) combines the three broad disciplines of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Business Applications. This course aims to develop the ideas of developing, analyzing, and validating mathematical models for decision problems, and their systematic solution. The course involves modeling and mathematical analysis.

Course Description
This course is a continuation of Intermediate Accounting I. Topics examined include debt financing, equity financing, income taxes, leases, dilutive securities and earnings per share calculations, and derivatives and hedging activities. While the primary emphasis will be on Hong Kong practice, financial accounting and reporting practice in U.S. and China will also be discussed from time to time throughout the semester. We will also discuss the accounting principles and standards based on International Accounting Standards (IAS). Since 1993, IAS has been the basis for all new standards adopted in Hong Kong. In addition, IAS is providing the framework for the development of accounting standards in China

Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the economics and management of business firms. After an overview of the main theories of firms, the course equips students with the main analytical tools used in managerial accounting. Then the course provides a comprehensive analysis of corporate strategic decisions. The course blends theoretical and analytical approaches with real-life insights and applications from the business sector. Students are encouraged to take an active part in the learning process. The course discusses topics including the structure and governance of firms, an introduction to business economics, theories of the firm and stakeholders and shareholders, agency and corporate governance mechanisms, financial statements, measuring performance through financial ratios, strategic analysis and managerial decisions, economies of scale and production capacity, economies of scope and diversification decisions, vertical integration, the competitive environment and market structures and industries, creating and sustaining the competitive advantage, organizations and values, organizational structures, incentives and organizational behavior, and leaders and top management teams.
