Course Description
The announcement that the world is ending has entered into public debate. The signs are all there: global warming, sixth extinction, the destruction of ecosystems. In this course students consider if the imminence of the Apocalypse is changing radical thinking in politics and what type of politics can be imagined if we are entering into the End of Days. This is the jumping off point of this seminar which proposes to study the politics at the dawn of another threat. The most contemporary theories are studied—collapsology, Anthropocene, survivalism, as well as older theories.

Course Description

This course explores the theory and practice of market design. Economists study market mechanisms, and are also involved in the design of markets. Key examples include auctions to sell electricity, radio spectrum, or procurement contracts; mechanisms to sell internet advertising; online marketplaces; algorithms to match candidates to jobs, students to schools, or allocate courses to students; organ exchange systems. The field of market design studies how to choose the rules of mechanisms that solve such allocation problems, or how to organize successful marketplaces. It builds on the tools of game theory and mechanism design. This course explains the underlying theory in an intuitive way, and discusses actual designs. The goal is to understand why some market institutions succeed and other fail. The course is based on lectures to expose the theory, and class discussion of applications.

Comics are more than a collection of images; this narrative art is read in a complex system of relationships that involves the space of the board, the double board, and the album. This course examines these relationships by focusing on the theme of the quest through comics from the Franco-Belgian domain that showcase a universe of medieval inspiration. Students research this medieval influence and follow its progression through years of publication and in different countries as it appears in the political and social commentary in the world of comics. Students analyze the way the written word interacts with visual images, pushes boundaries of traditional art, and serves as the content of consumable media.

Course Description
This course defines political engagement as an ensemble of militant acts, which could take place in a variety of frameworks and under different conditions. This wide definition of politics, which includes parties, unions, associations, and all other militant forms, invites the student to view political fact through a new lens. The course looks at the specifics of French political life, including the role played by external actors to the conventional political scene. This method also sheds light on the reciprocal relationship between actors and institutional and cultural systems. The four Constitutions that France has known since 1870 have shaped militant practices and have inversely been shaped by the subjectivity of the actors and the changes in their mode of engagement. Prerequisites for this course include a knowledge of French history from 1870 to present.
